Persuasive Speech Topics

Persuasive Speech Topics

A good persuasive speech topic is a claim that a reasonable person in your audience could disagree with, and that you can argue in the time you have been given. Below are 153 of them, each written as a position you can defend, grouped for high school students, college students and professional audiences, with separate sections of 5 minute, funny and unique topics.

How to choose a persuasive speech topic

Most weak persuasive speeches fail at the topic stage: the subject is too broad, or nobody in the room disagrees with it. These four checks take about ten minutes.

  1. Write it as a sentence with "should" in it

"Social media" is a subject. "Schools should teach how to spot a manipulated photo" is a topic. If you cannot state your position in one sentence, you do not have a persuasive speech yet.

  2. Check that someone in the room disagrees

"Exercise is good for you" persuades nobody because nobody objects. Ask two classmates or colleagues for their view before you commit. If both shrug, sharpen the claim until one of them pushes back.

  3. Size the claim to your time slot

At a normal speaking pace of 130 to 160 words a minute, a 5 minute speech is about 650 to 800 words. That is room for one claim, two reasons and one request. Save policy questions with several sides for 10 minutes or more.

  4. Decide what you want the audience to do

A persuasive speech ends with a request: sign something, try something for a week, vote a certain way, change a rule. If you cannot name the action, the speech will drift into an informative one.

Example

Worked example: narrowing a topic for a 5 minute slot

  1. Start with the subject you care about: sleep.
  2. Turn it into a claim: "Teenagers need more sleep." Nobody disagrees, so it is not yet persuasive.
  3. Add who should do what: "High schools should start no earlier than 8:30 a.m." Now a head teacher or a parent could object.
  4. Fit it to five minutes: one reason about attention in first period, one about safety on the journey to school, and one answer to the objection about after-school activities.
  5. Name the request: "Sign the student council petition before Friday."

A persuasive speech outline that fits any of these topics

The five steps below follow Monroe's Motivated Sequence, the standard structure taught for persuasive speaking. For a 2 to 3 minute speech, give each step one or two sentences.

  1. Attention

Open with a specific picture or number from your audience's own life. "Raise your hand if you were awake before six this morning" works better than a dictionary definition.

  2. Need

Show that there is a problem and that it affects the people listening. Use one piece of evidence you can source and one example they will recognize.

  3. Satisfaction

State your proposal in one sentence, then explain how it solves the problem. This is the place to answer the strongest objection before someone raises it.

  4. Visualization

Describe what changes if the audience agrees, and what stays the same if they do not. Keep it concrete: a Tuesday morning, a monthly bill, a team meeting.

  5. Action

Finish with one request that can be carried out this week. Say it twice, in the same words.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good persuasive speech topic?
Three things: it is a claim and not a subject, at least some of your audience disagrees or has not decided, and you can support it with evidence in the time you have. "Phones should be collected at the classroom door" passes all three. "Technology in schools" passes none.
What are good 5 minute persuasive speech topics?
Narrow claims with a single request, such as "Register as an organ donor today", "Back up your phone tonight" or "Write tomorrow's to-do list before you leave your desk". Five minutes is about 650 to 800 words, which covers one claim, two reasons and a call to action. The 5 minute section above lists twenty topics of this size.
Which persuasive speech topics work for college students?
Topics where the decision-maker is on campus work best, because you can aim the request at a real person or office: free or open-licensed textbooks, attendance that does not count toward grades, guaranteed first-year housing, published salary data for every major. See the college section for 25 options.
Are funny persuasive speech topics acceptable for a graded speech?
Usually yes, if the assignment does not specify a serious subject. A light topic such as "A hot dog is a sandwich" still has to show the skills being graded: a clear claim, organized reasons, evidence and a response to the opposing view. Check the rubric or ask your instructor if you are unsure.
How do I find a unique persuasive speech topic?
Start from something small you have noticed that annoys or pleases you, then turn it into a rule: "Recipes should list the washing-up they create", "Libraries should lend tools as well as books". Local and personal claims are rarely chosen by anyone else, and you already know the examples.
Which topics should I avoid?
Avoid topics where your audience's views are tied to deeply held personal or religious beliefs unless the assignment calls for it, since a short speech rarely moves anyone on those. Also avoid claims nobody disputes, and subjects you cannot find reliable evidence for.
How should I practice a persuasive speech?
Out loud, standing up, with a timer. Record the first run and listen for where you rush or lose the thread. Practice the opening and the final request until you can deliver them without notes, because those are the parts the audience remembers.
