Interview Questions by Role and Question Type

Guides to the questions asked for specific jobs, the standard questions every candidate gets, and visa and admissions interviews, each with sample answers to practice aloud.

Each link on this page goes to a full guide to the interview questions for one job title or one question: what interviewers ask, what they are testing and sample answers. If you know the role, jump to its job family and open the guide with the closest title.

If your interview is in the next day or two, start with the common questions, because tell me about yourself, why do you want this job and the behavioral questions come up for almost every role. Then read the guide for your own role to find the questions specific to it.

How to practice answers out loud

Reading sample answers is the easy part. An answer you have only read tends to come out longer and less organized when you say it, so rehearse the way you will be tested: speaking, with someone asking follow-up questions.

  1. 1

    Build a story bank

Choose real situations with a clear result: a conflict, a failure, a time you led, a time you persuaded someone. The STAR method guide recommends eight to ten stories you can adapt to different questions.

  2. 2

    Shape each one with STAR

Give the situation and task in a sentence or two, spend most of the time on what you did, then state the result. Say 'I' for your own actions, not 'we'.

  3. 3

    Say it with a timer

Aim for one to two minutes per answer. Record yourself and listen for filler words and for the point where the answer should have stopped.

  4. 4

    Add an interviewer

Ask a friend to interrupt with follow-up questions, or run a mock interview in SayNow AI, where the AI plays the interviewer and scores your answers.

Run a mock interview before the real one

Pick the job interview scenario in SayNow AI, answer by voice and get a score with suggestions on fluency, structure and how well you answered the question.
