How a mock interview session works
It works as an interview simulator: one conversation, start to finish, with someone on the other side who reacts to what you said.
Open the job interview scenario
Choose the job interview scenario in the app. If you want to drill one answer shape first, start from a framework such as STAR instead.
Answer out loud
The AI asks a question by voice. You answer the way you would across the table, with no notes on screen.
Handle the follow-up
The AI responds to what you said and keeps the conversation going, the way an interviewer probes a vague answer. This is where prepared scripts tend to fall apart, and where practice pays off.
Read the score and suggestions
After the conversation you get a score and suggestions in four areas: fluency, content structure, scenario fit and goal achievement.
Repeat the weak answer
Go again with one fix in mind. Two or three rounds on the same question usually does more than one round on ten questions.

- 1Open the job interview scenario

- 2Answer out loud
- 3Handle the follow-up

- 4Read the score and suggestions
- 5Repeat the weak answer
A short example exchange
We wrote this exchange by hand to show the pattern: question, answer, feedback, second attempt. Wording in the app differs.
Example for illustration, not a transcript from the app
Interviewer
Tell me about a time you had to deliver something with a tight deadline.
Candidate
Sure. So at my last job we were always pretty busy, and there was this one launch where everything was kind of last minute. The team was stressed and we had a lot of meetings about it. I basically just worked really hard and stayed late a lot, and in the end we got it done and everyone was happy.
Feedback
- Fluency
- Steady pace and few hesitations. "Pretty", "kind of" and "basically" soften every sentence. Cut them and the same answer sounds more certain.
- Content structure
- There is a situation and a result, and the middle is missing. What was your task, and what did you do apart from working late? A STAR answer spends most of its time on the action.
- Scenario fit
- The question was about you. "We" and "the team" appear more often than "I", so the interviewer cannot tell what your part was.
- Goal achievement
- The interviewer wants evidence that you can prioritize under pressure. "Got it done and everyone was happy" gives no deadline, no number and no decision you made.
A stronger second attempt
"Two weeks before a product launch, our payment provider changed its API and checkout stopped working in testing. I owned the checkout flow. I listed the eleven affected screens, cut four that were not needed for launch day, and paired with one backend engineer on the other seven. We shipped on the original date, and the four deferred screens went out nine days later."

Interview situations you can practice
An interview is several conversations in one: the opening, the experience questions, the phone screen, the money talk. These pages cover each, and the same scenarios and frameworks are in the app.
Job interview
The core scenario: common, behavioural and follow-up questions in one conversation.
Self-introduction
"Tell me about yourself" in 60 to 90 seconds, without reciting your CV.
Phone communication
Phone screens, where your voice has to do all the work.
Salary negotiation
Stating a number, giving your reasons and handling pushback.
Elevator pitch
A short pitch for career fairs and "why should we hire you".
STAR method
Situation, task, action, result: the standard shape for behavioural answers.
CAR method
Challenge, action, result: a shorter alternative to STAR.
Practice by role
Take the questions for your role from one of these guides, then answer them out loud in a mock interview.
Interview preparation checklist
Mock interview practice works best on top of some groundwork. Work through this in order.
A week before
- Read the job description and mark the five requirements that come up most
- Write down six stories from your work: a deadline, a conflict, a failure, a success, a time you led, a time you learned something fast
- Give each story one number: time saved, revenue, tickets closed, people trained
- Draft a 60 to 90 second answer to "Tell me about yourself"
Three days before
- Run a full mock interview out loud and note the two weakest answers
- Redo those two answers until each comes in under two minutes
- Prepare your salary range and the sentence you will use to state it
- Write three questions to ask the interviewer
The day before
- One more mock interview, without notes
- Say your opening answer and your closing question out loud once
- For video or phone: test the microphone, the link and the lighting
- Check the time, the address or the dial-in, and the interviewer's name
AI mock interview FAQ
- What is an AI mock interview?
- It is a practice interview where software plays the interviewer. In SayNow AI it is a voice conversation: the AI asks questions, you answer out loud, it follows up on what you said, and afterwards you get a score and suggestions.
- What feedback do I get after a mock interview?
- A score and written suggestions in four areas: fluency, content structure, scenario fit and goal achievement.
- Is an AI mock interview as good as practicing with a person?
- It is different. An AI is available whenever you are, never gets tired of the same question and gives feedback straight away, which makes it good for repetition. A person who knows your industry can tell you whether your examples are the right ones for that company and can read your body language. If you can, do both: many rounds with the AI, then one with a person.
- Does it ask questions for my specific role?
- The app's job interview scenario covers the kinds of questions most interviews share: your background, behavioural examples and follow-ups. For role-specific question lists, use the guides in the practice-by-role section on this page and rehearse those answers out loud.
- Can it help with technical interviews?
- It helps with the spoken part: explaining your reasoning, describing a past project, answering behavioural questions. It is not a coding environment and does not check technical answers for correctness.
- How many mock interviews should I do before the real one?
- There is no fixed number. A workable plan is one full run to find your weak answers, a few short rounds on those answers, and one final run the day before.
- Which devices does SayNow AI run on?
- SayNow AI is a mobile app for iOS and Android. It is free to download and offers a paid subscription.
